The Lutheran South baseball team was one of only two St. Louis County high school baseball programs awarded the 2022-2023 Team Academic Excellence Award by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

To be considered for this honor, teams had to meet certain criteria: they must be a college or high school team, the head coach must be an American Baseball Coaches Association member and the team must have had a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2022-23 academic year.

Including Lutheran South, 16 Missouri high schools and seven Missouri colleges and universities were given this award for the 2022-2023 school year. In total, close to 800 baseball programs around the nation – including high schools, junior colleges, and universities – were presented the award this year.

This is the first time the Lutheran South baseball team has won the Team Academic Excellence Award under the leadership of Coach Mike Callihan, who is going into his fifth year of coaching at Lutheran South.

“We’re here as educators to have student-athletes – and the key there is student first and athlete second, you know,” Callihan said. “Education is the large priority of why I’m here, as well as coaching baseball.”
