Lutheran Day at the Ballpark
With a rise in enrollment and strong donor enthusiasm, we stand ready for a major campus expansion at Lutheran South. We plan to break ground as early as this summer on our new Performing Arts Center.
The Darren C. Jubel Charitable Foundation has pledged a $6 million gift for the project, which will not only showcase the school’s theater and music programs but provide an appropriate space for chapel and other school events. Lutheran South’s enrollment next fall will exceed 500, and we are expecting to reach capacity the following year. The new theater will accommodate more than 600 people.
We invite you to take a peek behind the curtain at some of the plans we have in store. Join us on Sunday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. in the gym before our spring production of Seussical Jr. There you will see plans for the new construction that includes space for our fine arts programs, as well as a dramatic lobby, collaboration and office space, and the Lancer Spirit Store.
As part of the generous $6 million pledge, the Jubel Foundation issued a challenge for us to raise $4.5 million to unlock the full gift. We are almost there! Please consider a gift to help us raise the curtain in our Performing Arts Center and set the stage for more coming attractions.
For more information about this project, contact Paul Gray, Director of Advancement at 314-833-1091 or donate at LSlancers.org/give.
NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH: Join us in welcoming Brad Loomis as Lutheran South's new Head Football Coach. A former assistant coach and player at Washington University, Coach Loomis will use his college coaching experience to help Lancers play at the next level.
Coach Loomis was a defensive coordinator at Lutheran South in 2011 and has also been an assistant coach at Oakville High School. As an outside linebacker in college, Loomis won Wash U's MVP award as the top defensive player. He led the team in tackles as a junior and ranked second as a senior. He helped the Bears' defense finish first in the nation in total defense in 1999 and third in 2000. As a high school player and team captain, he led his team to a 28-0 record and back-to-back state championships during his junior and senior seasons.
Originally from Oregon, Loomis has coached the University Athletic Association's Defensive MVP, the Suburban West High School Defensive Player of the Year, and dozens of All-Conference players. He has led football camps at Wash U, where he was a running backs/special teams coach and a linebackers coach over a nine-year period. He, his wife, and 5-year-old twins live in Oakville.
TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Geography teacher Joel Gilbert, who is known for his antics like jumping off his desk and his peculiar vocabulary was named Teacher of the Year by the Affton-Lemay Chamber of Commerce.
Gilbert, who also coaches cross country and boys tennis, engages students in the learning process, making his classes some of the favorites at South. Students quickly learn that he genuinely cares about them and will go to great lengths to see them succeed.
SINGING AT STATE: Choir member Morgan Pett has advanced to the State Solo Festival after receiving the highest rating possible at the MSHSAA District Solo competition at Parkway Central High School. She performed two songs at the festival - one of them completely in Spanish, a language in which she is not fluent.
She selected "El Tra La La" because it was an opportunity to step out of her comfort zone, she said. The piece is also lively, which allows her to showcase her musical theatre side by singing with attitude.
Her creativity definitely paid off. Morgan will compete in the state competition at the University of Missouri in April.
BAND ACCOLADES: Sophomore Alex Goetz is headed to state after impressing the judges with his trumpet solo at the District Solo competition. Alex scored an exemplary rating and will be competing at Mizzou next month.
STATE SWIMMING: Sophomore Ella Arbeiter medaled in the state swimming championship. Ella took 8th in the 200 freestyle and 13th in the 100 butterfly. She additionally broke the school record in the 100 freestyle with a 55.35 and in the 200 individual medley, swimming it in 2.20.
DISTRICT CHAMPS: t was a nail-biter, but the Lady Lancers defeated the Ursuline Bears 43-41 to become back-to-back District Champions!
SUMMER CAMP: Does your child enjoy shooting hoops? Love being on stage? Want to learn a new sport like football or field hockey?

For the sixth year in a row, Lutheran South's basketball teams helped make a dream come true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The teams presented the foundation with a $5,000 check to buy 13-year-old Vanessa a she shed, where she can be creative. It was a great night coupled with a comeback victory over Mehlville!
