Distinguished Alumni
Appeal Banner
We celebrated the induction of our first group of Distinguished Alumni over Homecoming weekend in October. This accomplished group included an Olympian, judge, lawyer,
doctor, CEO, pilot, journalist, musician, coach, and a state champion basketball team.
Not only did they impress us with their achievements, they humored us with their high school
stories and inspired us by reinforcing the importance of Christian education. Thank you
to all who attended our inaugural event. Read more about each individual's accomplishments here.
Message from Peter Mayer
Peter Mayer, LS '76, was included in the Distinguished Alumni but was unable to make the recognition event. Instead, the lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett sent a video and even played a song. Watch it here.
Alumni gather for Homecoming
The All-Alumni Tailgate at the Homecoming football game was a huge success! More than 100 alumni attended the event complete with live music, snacks, and beverages. Thank you to all who attended.

Historic Gift Sets Stage for New Auditorium
Lutheran South has received a $6 million pledge from the Darren C. Jubel Charitable Foundation to fund a new performing arts center at the school. The gift, the largest single pledge South has received of its kind, comes in two parts - a $2.5 million gift for immediate use in pre-construction work and a $3.5 million challenge gift. The challenge gift will be unlocked as soon as additional donors pledge a total of $4.5 million.
The plan, which is part of a three-phase project, will add a new facility north of the current building and a dramatic new entrance to the school. The new addition will include a performing arts auditorium with seating for up to 600 people, music practice rooms, a welcoming lobby, and new administrative space. For more information about this project, contact Paul Gray, Director of Advancement at 314-833-1091 or donate at LSlancers.org/give.
A South grad's film has been selected for the St. Louis International Film Festival on Saturday, November 20. Nathan Sutton, LS '02, directed “New Year,” a film about a group of friends who come together for a distressing New Year's Eve celebration full of love, lies and unquestionable truth. As the night unfolds, a clearer picture emerges about just how much their ideas about each other have changed. Those realizations are further precipitated by a manipulative and destructive game called “I Love You, I Hate You,” which causes fights to break out and old friends to face hard truths. As the countdown to the New Year begins, the group is forced to deal with some increasingly harsh realities. To watch the trailer or to purchase tickets for the 9:15 p.m. show at the Tivoli, click here. Sutton and his wife, the co-writer and lead actress in the film, will hold a Q&A following the screening. The film will be released in select theaters in late December.
Our alumni continue to make us proud! Austin Cheeley, LS '17, a pitcher for the University of Missouri, went the extra mile to make a fan's day. >> https://bit.ly/3B8ejIp
With 144 years of teaching between them, we recognized our teachers who recently retired.
Bill Rusch fully retired after a total of 59 years of teaching, with 40 of those as a science teacher at Lutheran South.
Ken Steinbrueck, while still serving in a part-time role, retired this year from full-time ministry after 43 years of teaching, with 40 of those years as a LuSo industrial technology teacher.
And Greg Gastler retired after 42 years of service, with 13 of those years at South, primarily as a choir teacher.
These men have influenced many lives by their work in the classroom, and we thank them for their service.
We know the importance of in-person learning. Read in St. Louis Magazine why Senior Gracie Maurer made the switch to Lutheran South last year and how she thrived during a
pandemic. >> https://bit.ly/3B3w8ZU

Members of the Class of 1970 FINALLY celebrated their 50+1 reunion with a full weekend of events in October. From a Friday barbecue and a school tour to a Saturday dinner and a Sunday worship service, these classmates had a great weekend catching up!

After a year of planning, the Class of 1971 was able to celebrate its 50th reunion back at Lutheran South! Classmates wandered the halls, socialized, ate, drank and reminisced. It was a lovely evening, and they were excited to be back at their old stomping grounds.

The 80s were BACK with these classes celebrating together at the Firehouse Bar & Grill in October! 1981's 40th and 1980's 40+1 reunions did not disappoint.

Families from the Class of 2001 gathered at Lutheran South for the alumni tailgate and to tour the school. The next day, the group gathered at the St. Louis Zoo to catch up on the last 20 years since leaving LHSS.
