Lutheran South Hires New Baseball Coach

After eleven years at Lutheran South, baseball icon Steve Pfund is stepping down from coaching. Pfund will be replaced by Saint Louis University High’s assistant coach, Mike Callihan. For 20 years, Callihan served at McCluer North High School, where he was head baseball coach and also organized the strength and conditioning program for all athletes.

 

 

Callihan is a graduate of Fort Zumwalt North High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Quincy University and a master’s in education from Lindenwood University. He is the head coach of Rawlings Tigers Baseball during the summer and the pitching and hitting instructor at Balls-n-Strikes in Ballwin.

 

Callihan has big shoes to fill. Under Pfund’s leadership, Lancer baseball won the last four district championships in a row. The team secured eight out of the last 11 district titles. The team boasted a second-place finish in state in 2012 and 2017. Pfund, who is a 1978 graduate of Lutheran South, won more than 70 percent of the games he coached at the school. He was inducted into the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016.

 

The Pfund name has been synonymous with Lancer baseball for more than 40 years. Pfund’s father, Roy Pfund, was the head coach at Lutheran South from 1962 - 1988. He remained as an assistant coach for five more years, volunteered as a pitching coach upon retirement and served as the team’s scorekeeper under his son. Roy Pfund was inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association in 2015.

 

Steve Pfund’s departure coincides with the announcement that his first grandchild will be born in January. He will continue to teach at South.
